How to open a new Bank Account?
Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched Jan Dhan Yojna for the Indian masses so that the public inculcates the habit of banking. It is a mammoth task to bring each and every Indian under the gambit of the Jan Dhan Yojna. Due to illiteracy the rural and urban poor find it a difficult task to open a Bank account. The government, through advertisements, is appealing to all the individuals with ability to get the account opened in any Bank without any hassles to bring the urban and rural population to Banking manifold by educating them about the benefits of the bank account under Jan Dhan Yojna which will be linked to the Aadhaar Card issued by UIDAI. As per the Banking Law and Practice any eligible individual can open the bank account by submitting the following documents to the Bank of his or her choice:
- Any one of the following KYC documents is acceptable as proof of identity/address:
- Passport (Both for address and identity)
- Voter’s Identity Card (Address Proof)
- Driving License ( Identity Proof)
- Aadhaar Card (Address Proof)
- NREGA Card (Address Proof)
- PAN Card (Identity Proof)
Notes:
- In case of Minor if the minor is less than 10 years of age then ID proof of the person who will operate the account on behalf of minor will have to be submitted. In case where minor can operate the account independently, KYC documents for identification and/or address verification as in the case of any other individual would apply.
- For Non Resident Indian accounts Passport and Residence Visa Copies duly attested by:
- Foreign Offices
- Notary Public
- Indian Embassy
- Offices of correspondent banks whose signatures are verifiable through an authorized (A/B category Forex handling branch) branch of the Bank.
In addition to the above the individual will have to submit two recent passport size photographs. Some modern banks have installed the web cameras to capture the photograph of the customer instantly as the prospective customer has to make himself or herself personally present in the bank before the Bank Officer to attest the signatures and photo of the customer. Though some banks have done away with the introduction process as they verify the credentials online from “Know Your PAN” and Voter Card – but most of the banks require the account to be introduced by an existing KYC compliant account holder of the bank.
Caution : Do not allow the bank account to become dormant or inoperative and make proper nominations in the Bank Account.
