Though while preparing for this exam, you should remember that the IELTS examiner will grade you on the basis of your knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and pronunciation.

So, while practicing for the speaking exam, you should focus on using correct vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and fluency to score well. And here are those precious tips to do well in the speaking test of IELTS.

  1. Use Good Vocab: To enhance your speaking ability in IELTS, you should concentrate on enhancing your vocabulary. No doubt, you cannot master vocab within a day or two, but it takes time. The trick here is to focus on some interesting vocabulary like idioms or slang. Generally, the examiner of the IELTS test would not be interested in vocabulary based on your textbooks. But, use something better and more attractive like hanging out, chilling out, checking out, etc. In addition, learning idioms is another good way to improve vocabulary. Now again, we are not saying to learn all idioms as it is not practical and also not possible to learn overnight, but learn those related to prospective questions that may be asked by the examiner during exam like how are you, Tell me something about you, etc.
  2. Frequent Use of Linking Words: Using various types of linking words can do a great job of improving your speaking ability. So, when you are practicing English speaking at home, concentrate on the frequent usage of linking words like but, also, such as, and as well. In case, you are narrating a story, use words like subsequently, at long last, after that, and next. Words like moreover, subsequently, furthermore, and as a result are quite impressive when used in speaking. Remember, the usage of the linking words would not just result in good scoring for English speaking fluency, but for vocabulary also.
  3. Practice Smartly & wisely: The biggest mantra to score high on the speaking IELTS test is to do a lot of practice. As the speaking test aims to check the speaking power, capacity, and knowledge of an examinee, you should practice as much as you can on speaking at home. This is not a hard job at all as you can practice speaking with friends, colleagues, neighbors, or even yourself by seeing in the mirror. It will prove a greatly helpful way to improve your IELTS speaking. During the exam, the examiner would try to check if you can speak well and enough with fewer pauses or if your answers have a lot of thinking, less clarity, etc. So, try to seek the help of a native speaker and chat with him or her as it will prove the best way to enhance your speaking fluency and great practice as well.
  4. Remember You Can Say – Don’t Know: Oftentimes, candidates perform poorly in the IELTS speaking test because they find it difficult to say “I Don’t Know” to a question they are not familiar with. This approach leads them to attempt to answer the question that is full of confusion, and less clarity and thus results in low scoring in the exam. Just remember that it is a test of English language speaking ability, not an academic exam were not attempting means low marking. In addition, if you try to give an answer shortly, then it is also not an issue as there will be more questions that may come from the examiner. So, rather than focusing on rehearsing answering full answers, make it reasonable with clarity and thoughtfulness. The question you find yourself unable to answer can be answered as Don’t Know, that’s also not an issue.
  5. Talk to Yourself By Talking To Mirror: It is another great tip to practice the IELTS speaking test at home and this method will certainly give you great outcomes. This tip is helpful for those who do not have anyone around to talk to in English or who like to practice separately. While speaking to a mirror, you will learn to talk while keeping good eye contact which is a key to good communication. So, whenever you have time, just sit in front of the mirror and start your IELT English practice.
  6. Practice By Writing Down Questions: It is another great activity you can try to improve your IELTS speaking at home. In this method, you should write various questions you think an examiner asks during the test and give relevant answers. This way, you can practice not just for a speaking exam, but also for writing tests.

So, follow these tips and start your IELTS speaking practice from today. These tips will do a great job in enhancing your overall speaking sense and help you to perform well on the test.
